Index of Teaching Strategies

Frequently, I am asked to share specific research supporting various instructional approaches. So, I thought a summary of the Index of Teaching & Learning Strategies Effect Sizes from Hattie’s books, Visible Learning and the Science of How We Learn(2013); and Visible Learning: A Synthesis of Over 800 Meta-Analyses(2008) would be helpful. Hattie uses ‘effect sizes’ as the best way of determining the greatest influence on learning. I realize this research is from K-12, but I hope there are generalizable ideas to higher ed or notions to explore. The link above includes his operational definition of Effect Size and a table describing all topics. I will share a few below, which may be of interest:

0.33 Using simulations and gaming

0.37 Computer assisted instruction

0.51 Professional Development

0.57 Providing Worked Examples

0.57 Cooperative Learning

0.60 Concept Mapping

0.62 Teaching Learning Strategies

0.69 Metacognitive Strategies

0.75 Providing Better Feedback

0.90 Formative Assessment

1.44 Developing High Expectations
