Impact of Summer Teaching Workshop

This week, we are sharing a summary of the 2010 article, “Faculty Development in Higher Education: Long-term Impact of a Summer Teaching Workshop” by Persellin & Goodrick. In this study participants of summer Teaching Workshop were surveyed to determine long-term impacts of this type of professional development experience. In summary, the results indicate that a majority of faculty participants across rank and discipline continued to view the workshop as effective. The data for the study was collected from 206 of the 370 former participants from 35 different disciplines through the years of 1992 – 2007. One strong data point indicated that 91% of the respondents agreed with the statement, “I have tried a new teaching strategy that I learned at the workshop”. Also, 87% agreed they had taken more risks in their teaching. In examining faculty comments, several respondents wrote that they had recommended the workshop to their colleagues, which is an ideal way to communicate effective faculty development opportunities.
