2023 Summary Teaching Data
Today is the final Friday SoTL blog article of 2023. Chances are that many of you have been tracking effective teaching ideas as well as higher education in general over the year, but in case you have been too busy, I would like to share a few highlights for your review and consideration for the upcoming year.
Inside Higher Ed (2023) shares an article entitled, “24 Stats for 2024” and here are a few:
19% of students know about ChatGPT and have used it for schoolwork;
46% of faculty say students come with a mental health concern multiple times/month;
50% of students at in-state institution will pay $11K in tuition and $1,250 for books;
70% of students prefer hybrid or fully digital courses over face-to-face instruction;
61% of students spend more than 3 hours/day on social media (most using TikTok);
46% of employees believe their university failed to prepare them for their current job;
41% of graduating students are more likely to apply for a hybrid job; 22% for remote;
67% of Gen Z grads define a high starting salary as $82,000 a year;
Employees who acquire AI expertise see their pay grow 35%.
e-Learning shares 5 eLearning Trends To Keep An Eye On In 2024 which include AI, Gamification, Personalized Learning Through Adaptive Technology, Mobile Learning And Micro-learning, and Virtual Reality (VR) And Augmented Reality (AR).
Another Ed Tech group, Axon Park shares Case Studies of AI Effectiveness in higher ed instruction. This report was written in February 2023, so there may be significant differences in prediction and outcomes even within less than one year:
80% accurate recommendations to help students, when compared to human advice;
With 91% accuracy, AI-enhanced Chatbots provided personalized guidance;
AI improved students’ grades by 30% while reducing anxiety by 20%;
47% of LMS will be powered by AI in 3 years;
With a 97% success rate, AI TA answers 10,000 messages/semester;
AI predicts a student’s grade with 80% accuracy, to save 34,712 students from failing;
95% of graduates with hearing impairments are employed, thanks to AI; and
Educators spend 70% less time grading by using an AI-Powered grading tool.
