60 ChatGPT Assignments

I realize it is only Tuesday, but this week I would like to share a SoTL resource that was just published yesterday and thought that some of you might be interested in using it this term. Dr. Kevin Yee and the team at UCF has published this free eBook entitled, 60+ Ideas for ChatGPT Assignment" (2023). You may recall that UCF CTL originally published the list of 100 Interactive Strategies (that has since grown to 289). I have been enjoying many discussions with faculty over the past several months on how to integrate generative AI (GenAI) into their effective teaching. The UCF team has created a very well organized resource that defines AI, and then shares specific ways to integrate with description and sample prompts. They categorize the resource by the following components:

  1. Understanding how AI works

  2. Deciding when to use AI (and when not to)

  3. Valuing AI

  4. Applying effective prompt engineering methods

  5. Evaluating AI output

  6. Adding human value

  7. Displaying digital adaptability

Some of the examples include:

  • Conversation: Create an assignment that asks students to engage ChatGPT in a conversation.

  • Regenerate a Response: Ask students to generate multiple responses from a prompt.

  • Narrowing Search Results: Teach students how to purposefully narrow responses ChatGPT generates.

  • Explanations for Wrong Answers: Ask students to look up incorrect answers.

  • Seminal Scholars & Studies: Have students report what GPT generates as seminal scholars and articles.

  • Hallucinated Sources: Ask students to verify the existence of quoted sources via the institution’s library.

  • Convert to Conversational Language: Encourage students to use ChatGPT to simplify language when reading complex texts.

  • Qualitative Analysis: Ask students to use ChatGPT to perform qualitative analysis, then evaluate the output.

  • Generate an Outline: Ask students to use ChatGPT to scaffold their ability to create and develop outlines for their writing.

  • Role Play: Ask students to create personas and then engage in interview-based conversations that simulate real-world scenarios.

  • Create Study Plans: Demo how ChatGPT can help students create study plans that include key course content.

  • Time Management: Help students boost productivity with time management tools.

  • Career Paths: Assist students in setting and reaching career goals.
