AI for Coursework

This week I would like to share timely resources on sample statements that faculty might include or adapt for their syllabi regarding use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools for coursework. Dr. Bertram/UCSD Director, Academic Integrity Office asked ChatGPT 4 and Bing to create verbiage that could be included on a syllabus. I share below for your consideration.

BING CHAT SUGGESTED SYLLABUS STATEMENT: Academic integrity is the foundation of learning and scholarship. It means that you are honest and responsible in your academic work and that you respect the work of others. Academic integrity also means that you do not use any form of generative AI (such as text, image, or code generators) to complete your assignments, unless explicitly authorized by the instructor. Generative AI is a powerful tool that can have many applications, but it can also pose ethical challenges and risks. Using generative AI to produce or modify your work without proper attribution or permission is a form of academic misconduct that violates university policy.

I expect you to uphold the highest standards of academic integrity in this class. If you have any questions or doubts about what constitutes academic integrity or generative AI, please ask me before submitting your work. I will report any suspected cases of academic misconduct to the Academic Integrity Office. Depending on the severity and frequency of the violation, the consequences may include a zero on the assignment, a failing grade in the course, or suspension or expulsion from the university. I hope that you will use this course as an opportunity to learn and grow as a student and a scholar. I am here to support you and help you succeed.

CHAT GPT-4 SUGGESTED SYLLABUS STATEMENT: As students, you are expected to maintain the highest standards of academic integrity and ethical conduct in all aspects of your academic work, including the use of AI tools and resources. In recent years, the development of generative AI, such as language models and writing assistants, has led to a new frontier in academic research and writing. While these AI technologies can be valuable tools for enhancing productivity and creativity, it is crucial that their use aligns with the principles of academic honesty and ethical responsibility.

In this course, we encourage you to use AI tools and resources responsibly and ethically. When employing generative AI, please adhere to the following guidelines:

  1. Originality and Attribution: While AI tools can help generate ideas or assist with phrasing, it is essential that the work you submit represents your own original thoughts, analysis, and synthesis. If you use AI-generated content, be sure to attribute it properly and use it only as a starting point for your own work.

  2. Collaboration and Assistance: If you choose to use AI tools to collaborate on a project or seek assistance with your work, be transparent with your teammates and instructors about the extent of AI involvement. Remember that collaboration and assistance should enhance, not replace, your own intellectual contributions.

  3. Data Privacy and Security: When using AI tools, be aware of potential privacy and security risks.Only use trusted platforms and be cautious when sharing sensitive information or intellectual property.

  4. Critical Evaluation: Always critically evaluate the outputs of AI tools, as they may contain inaccuracies, biases, or inappropriate content. Be prepared to fact-check, revise, and adjust the AI-generated content to ensure its alignment with the course requirements and academic standards.

  5. Ethical Considerations: Consider the broader ethical implications of using AI technologies in your academic work. Reflect on issues such as fairness, accountability, transparency, and the potential societal impacts of AI-generated content.

By adhering to these guidelines, you contribute to fostering an academic environment that upholds the principles of integrity, honesty, and ethical conduct. As a student, you play a critical role in shaping the future of AI usage in academia and beyond. By using AI tools responsibly, you help ensure that these technologies continue to enrich and advance our collective knowledge while adhering to the highest ethical standards.

Instructors and teaching assistants are available to provide guidance and support on the responsible use of AI technologies in this course. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the ethical use of generative AI in your assignments, please do not hesitate to reach out for assistance.
